A staple design in the custom car world, the flying eyeball HELS style. The flying eyeball became an icon of American custom-car culture through the postwar California hot-rod and pinstriping scene, most famously associated with artist Kenny Howard, better known as Von Dutch, who was using variations of the motif by the late 1940s. The symbol became firmly embedded in 1950s and ’60s Kustom Kulture alongside pinstriping, flames, monsters and the work of artists such as Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. Combining the eye’s long-standing associations with vision and awareness with wings suggesting speed and freedom, it evolved into a rebellious emblem of hot-rodding before spreading into motorcycle, skate, tattoo and streetwear culture.
